Over the last three years, the world has shifted beneath our feet.
The genocide in Gaza has ruptured assumptions about international law, human rights, political institutions, and the moral credibility of the West. Climate breakdown is accelerating as we cross increasingly dangerous thresholds. Authoritarianism and fascistic movements are gaining ground. Artificial intelligence is transforming societies at extraordinary speed as it transmutes from “save all” to “terrifying threat,” while wealth and power is now concentrated into the hands of a few who cannot be trusted.
Many of the frameworks through which we understood the world, and imagined its future, no longer exist nor meet the great needs of this time.
So where to now?
Sacred Mountain Sangha invites you to an end-of-year gathering and fundraiser: a conversation among spiritual teachers, activists, thinkers, and movement builders reflecting on what these last years have revealed, and what they now ask of us. Rather than asking how Dharma and spirituality can help us adjust to an increasingly untenable world, we want to ask a more radical question:
How might spiritual wisdom help us move beyond business as usual altogether?
Speakers
Lubna Masarwa (she/her) is a Palestinian journalist and Middle East Eye’s Palestine and Israel bureau chief, based in Jerusalem. She is also a meditation teacher, and spiritual activist based in Jerusalem. She has been involved in actions for breaking the siege in Gaza for over a decade. She has managed big teams of journalists in Gaza and the West Bank for the last 10 years. She is inspired to co-create a revolutionary dharma for this historic time, for people living through war and genocide.
Alnoor Ladha is an activist, journalist, political strategist, and community organizer and co-founder of Brave Earth Retreat Center in Costa Rica. He co-authored Post Capitalist Philanthropy, and serves on the board of Culture Hack Labs, a co-operatively run advisory for social movements and progressive organizations. Alnoor comes from a Sufi lineage and writes at the crossroads of politics and spirituality in troubled times. His work focuses on the intersection of political organizing, systems thinking, narrative shifts and structural change.
Thanissara (she/her) is a Dharma teacher, author, poet, activist, and former Buddhist monastic trained in the Thai Forest tradition. She brings together contemplative practice, feminist inquiry, and systems change. Shaped by decades of engagement in rural post-Apartheid South Africa and an ongoing exploration of collective liberation amid our intersecting social and ecological crises, she works at the interface of inner awakening and cultural transformation. She co-founded Sacred Mountain Sangha, CA, and the Dharmagiri Sacred Mountain Retreat in South Africa.
Rima Vesely-Flad, Ph.D. is the author of three books: The Fire Inside: The Dharma of James Baldwin and Audre Lorde (North Atlantic Books, 2026), Black Buddhists and the Black Radical Tradition: The Practice of Stillness in the Movement for Liberation (NYU Press, 2022) and Racial Purity and Dangerous Bodies: Moral Pollution, Black Lives, and the Struggle for Justice (Fortress Press, 2017). She is Founding Director of the Initiative for Black Buddhist Studies and a Visiting Affiliate Fellow at Princeton University’s Center for Culture, Society, and Religion.
